Medical Cannabis Improves Sleep for Insomnia Patients

Overview

NORML reports on data from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry showing that insomnia patients who consume cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) report sustained improvements in sleep quality over 18 months. Among 124 patients assessed at multiple intervals, cannabis use was associated with better sleep, reduced anxiety, and improved health-related quality of life. Fewer than 10% reported adverse events. Separate data shows nearly 40% of insomnia patients reduced or eliminated prescription sleep aids after starting medical cannabis. Placebo-controlled trials have previously confirmed cannabis extracts improve insomnia symptoms, with 60% of participants no longer classified as clinical insomniacs after two weeks.

Clinical Perspective

MEDICAL CANNABIS AND SLEEP: THE EVIDENCE KEEPS BUILDING

NORML synthesizes growing evidence that medical cannabis provides sustained sleep improvements. UK Medical Cannabis Registry data: 124 patients tracked over 18 months showed improved sleep, reduced anxiety, better quality of life. <10% adverse events. ~40% reduced or quit sleep meds.

Placebo-controlled trials strengthen the case: 60% no longer clinical insomniacs after 2 weeks of cannabis oil (10mg THC, 15mg CBD). Sleep quality improved 80%. Midnight melatonin up 30%. This doesn’t mean cannabis is a cure-all, but for patients who’ve exhausted conventional options, the evidence supports it as a legitimate tool.
