This June 26, 2026 Journal of Addiction Medicine paper is not a treatment-efficacy study. It is a national pediatric safety signal built from America’s Poison Centers data across 2000 through 2024, and that makes it clinically useful for a different reason. Parents, pediatricians, emergency clinicians, and cannabis clinicians all need a realistic picture of how often cannabis exposures are being reported in children, which age groups are rising, and what the study design can and cannot prove about policy or product drivers. The paper earns attention because the reported increases are large and recent. It also requires restraint because descriptive surveillance should sharpen prevention and counseling without being oversold as a single-cause explanation.

A June 26, 2026 Journal of Addiction Medicine study found that cannabis exposures reported to U.S. poison centers rose sharply in children age 12 and under from 2009 through 2024. The signal is clinically important for prevention and counseling, but the study is descriptive and does not prove a one-cause policy story.

What This Study Teaches Us
The paper teaches that pediatric cannabis exposures reported to America’s Poison Centers increased dramatically after 2009 in both children under 6 and children age 6 to 12, making this a meaningful public-health and counseling signal. It also teaches that surveillance data are best used to identify risk patterns and prevention priorities, not to make overly simple causal claims.

Families and clinicians often hear about accidental cannabis ingestions as isolated headlines.
