### Quick Answer: Can Cannabis Help Myofascial Pain?

**Some patients report relief of myofascial pain with cannabis, but research is still early.** A recent study found that cannabinoids alter how fascia cells build the extracellular matrix, raising the possibility of both benefit and unwanted effects on musculoskeletal tissue. Discuss use with a clinician, especially for long-term treatment.

### Sensitivity of the Fasciae to the Endocannabinoid System: Production of Hyaluronan-Rich Vesicles and Potential Peripheral Effects of Cannabinoids in Fascial Tissue

In Summary

Myofascial tissue is a thin, strong, fibrous connective tissue that extends throughout the body to provide support and protection to muscles and bones. Myofascial pain is a common clinical disorder, in which patients feel acute muscle pain and weakness, and experience decreased range of motions. This disorder affects 85% of the population at least once during their lifetimes.

In the US, over the past decade, the availability and usage of cannabis in medical context has consistently increased, and myofascial pain has been one of the conditions reported to be alleviated by [cannabis therapy](https://cedclinic.com/cannabis-based-therapies-smoking-cessation/).

However, a recent study has demonstrated that cannabinoids – the major biologically active components of cannabis – affect the function of the fasciae, a constituent of the myofascial tissue. In particular, the fasciae helps synthesize the extracellular matrix (EM), a three-dimensional network of extracellular molecules that provide structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells in the myofascial tissue. Exposure to cannabinoids alter the biosynthesis of the EM by the fasciae and consequently remodels all surrounding cells and tissues. This finding suggests that therapeutic applications of cannabinoids to treat pain may lead to unwanted [side effects](https://cedclinic.com/cannabis-intoxication-memory-disruption/) to our musculoskeletal system.

## Cannabis and Myofascial Pain: Quick Answers

### What is myofascial pain?

Myofascial pain is muscle pain and tightness arising from the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, often with reduced range of motion. It is very common, with one estimate that it affects around 85% of people at least once in their lifetime.

### Does cannabis affect fascia?

A recent study showed that cannabinoids change how fascial cells produce hyaluronan-rich vesicles and the extracellular matrix. What this means for patients is still unclear, which is why long-term effects on musculoskeletal tissue deserve more research.

### Is cannabis a proven treatment for muscle pain?

Evidence is mixed and still developing. Many patients report benefit, but results vary, so cannabis is best considered as one part of a broader plan that may include movement therapy and other treatments.
