## Who Qualifies for Medical Cannabis & How It Can Help

Medically reviewed by [Dr. Benjamin Caplan](/drcaplan/), MD · Last updated August 3, 2026

Medical cannabis has transformed the lives of millions, offering relief for a wide range of conditions. Massachusetts law recognizes a range of qualifying conditions, but it also allows for medical discretion, meaning that if a certified healthcare provider determines cannabis could benefit your health, you may qualify even if your condition isn’t explicitly listed below.

## How Medical Cannabis Eligibility Works

In Massachusetts, medical cannabis is available to adults (18+) and to minors with parental/guardian consent and two certifying healthcare providers, one of whom must be a pediatrician or pediatric specialist.

You must have a qualifying medical condition, or another condition that a certifying provider believes could benefit from [cannabis therapy](https://cedclinic.com/cannabis-based-therapies-smoking-cessation/).

Common qualifying conditions include chronic pain, anxiety disorders, PTSD, [sleep disorders](/cannabis-for-sleep/), and neurological conditions.

Each patient must receive a written certification from a registered cannabis healthcare provider before applying for a medical cannabis card.
